Multifocal contact lenses are an ideal alternative for people over 40 with difficulty seeing near (presbyopia). In particular, people who already wore contact lenses to see into the distance before the age of 40 switch their distance lenses to combined distance-and-near (multifocal) contact lenses after 40.
Patient satisfaction with these lenses is 70%. In other words, 70 out of every 100 people who try them can see clearly both far and near and continue to use them.
There are various designs of these lenses. Usually the central part has the power for distance vision and the surrounding part the power for near vision.
