After the age of forty, we start to struggle with activities that require near vision, such as reading and working on a computer. Age-related difficulty seeing near is called “presbyopia”. If you cannot see near, you can choose one of the following treatment options:
Reading Glasses
These narrow-framed glasses are used only when reading, looking at a computer or during other activities that require near vision. You should not look into the distance through them.
Combined Distance-and-Near (Progressive) Glasses
The upper part of these glasses is set for looking into the distance and the lower part for looking at near objects. They are an advantage if your distance vision is also impaired, because you no longer need two separate pairs. The lenses must be fitted into the frame with the correct centring; otherwise you may not be able to use them comfortably.
Combined Distance-and-Near Contact Lenses
If you do not want to wear glasses, you can try contact lenses. Of 100 patients who try them, 70 achieve satisfactory distance and near vision with these lenses.
Intraocular Smart (Trifocal) Lens
Today an effective way of correcting near vision and removing the need for reading glasses is to implant a trifocal (smart) lens that provides distance, intermediate and near vision inside the eye.
Implanting a smart lens inside the eye is technically similar to cataract surgery.
Have your eyes assessed
Send your prescription history, previous eye reports and any corneal imaging for an individual assessment — in person in İstanbul or over video.
