Eye allergy, or allergic conjunctivitis, is a reaction to allergens in the air. People with it often also have allergic symptoms in the nose. There are two types:
- Seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis: an eye allergy that develops against pollen in the air. It occurs in spring and summer, at the same time as hay fever.
- Perennial allergic rhinoconjunctivitis: an eye allergy that develops against allergens such as house dust and animal hair. The allergy continues all year round. It is less common and milder than seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
Signs and Symptoms of Eye Allergy
- Redness of the eyes
- Itching of the eyes
- Watering of the eyes
- Swelling of the eyelids
- On examination, a bumpy appearance called “papillae” under the eyelids
Treatment
Eye allergy is treated with anti-allergic eye drops and, if necessary, steroid drops.
